THE AUSTRALIAN SOCCER EXPERIENCE PICKS UP ITS FIRST WINNER MEDAL
The Australian Soccer Experience has its first piece of silverware to report. As a result of Redlands City Devils surprise championship win in the Hyundai Queensland State League, a winners medal will be finding it way back to the UK.
Jimmy Froud spent half of the 2009 season playing for Redlands City scoring 5 goals in 7 (4) games before returning to the UK to start preseason with Ebbsfleet United in the English Conference.
In Jimmy’s absence, following a win in the last game of the season, Redlands were able to secure 4th spot in the league. Their good form was continued into the finals series and following away wins against Sunshine Coast (3rd in the regular season) and Olympic FC (2nd) they lined up against the Premier League winners, the Brisbane Strikers in the Championship decider.
Having gone behind early to their highly fancied opposition, Reds City Devils responded in emphatic fashion scoring 4 goals without reply to be crowned Queensland State Champions.
Speaking from his home in the UK Jimmy couldn’t hide his delight for his former club and team mates, “I had a great time while with Redlands and couldn’t be happier for the guys. I was extremely well looked after by the club and really appreciated the opportunity they gave me to play in Australia. During my time with them we were aware that we could compete with the top sides on our day but we weren’t as consistent as we needed to be. Winning three games away from home against the best 3 sides over the regular season to take out the grand final is an incredible achievement”
Rob Jones, Redlands City’s Director of Football, was equally complementary about the contribution Jimmy made through the first part of the season saying, “The Australian Soccer Experience made a number of players available to us and having spoken with Jimmy it was clear straight away that he would be a good fit for our club. He is a great lad and welcome back any time – the goals he scored during that early part of the season ultimately proved to be decisive in qualifying for the finals series. Our hope is he’ll be out again next season to collect his winners medal but if that is not possible we’ll make sure we get one to him one way or another!”
